In deciding on entering into the Master’s in Library and Information Science program, I had major anxiety and worry about my ability to complete the program with a full-time job and a small child. However, my passion for literacy and being a support to other teachers outweighed my fears. I ultimately decided that by becoming a school librarian I would be able to have an impact on a wider audience than my classroom affords me. As I have been in the program for almost a year now, I have certainly learned a great deal about libraries and technology. However, this was the first class where I really saw the full potential of what a school librarian has to offer.
It is difficult to pinpoint one takeaway from the class as I have learned a great deal and tested my technology prowess in new ways. However, I feel that overall my greatest takeaway is that school librarians can have a great impact, advocate for their necessity, and show their worth by being a technology leader within the school. As the COVID-19 pandemic has illustrated, online learning and technology are vital to education. Inspiring teachers to try new things and being a resource for teachers as they navigate the ever-changing technology landscape is an important role for a school librarian. Additionally, students are more involved in technology than ever before, thus reaching students on an educational level and a literacy level involves reaching them in the environment and with the tools that engage them. Lastly, the experiences and skills gained in this course have better prepared me to keep all stakeholders in mind as the school librarian. I have never created a blog, curated a list of resources, used many of the technology platforms we used this semester, or created a website from scratch. However, these exercises allowed me to see my potential as a school librarian and have further helped to prepare me for the future of school librarianship.
A school librarian is not just a student resource or parent resource, but the wider school community’s resource. It is this far reach that invigorates me to learn more and continually push myself, so that I can be the resource that so many schools are lacking.
